Coming in October | Coast to Coast – From West Africa to the World

Hi friends,

Its been ages. Life and work have been full, and fulfilling. I’ve been cooking, reading, sleeping, no developing as many recipes as I used to but yeah, such is life.

I’m excited to share some info about a series of events in New York this October. In partnership with the Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) and Ace hotel in Brooklyn, I’ll present a series of short ingredient-focused films I made earlier on in the year. They explore rice, beans, palm oil, okro and sugar cane – painful histories, stories of resilience, gifted and talented kitchen crafters. This work was created under the mentorship of Koyo Kouoh as part of the Forecast mentorship program. To bring my ideas to life, I worked with the incredibly talented Nigerian-British spoken word artist, Tolu Agbelusi.

The films explore ingredients and narratives surrounding West African food and the journeys they made from the coast of West Africa to those of numerous Caribbean islands, Latin America, Europe, the American South and around the world.

The events will be a combination of demo, discussion, film screenings and to tie things together, tastings focused on celebrating the ingredients.

If you’d like to attend the event, here’s a link for more information and tickets. There will also be opportunities to connect online

MOFAD | MOFAD brings the world of food and drink to life with exhibits you can taste, touch, and smell. Our goal is to be the world’s premier food museum and a global educational resource that inspires generations of curious eaters of all ages and backgrounds.

DEMO KITCHEN BY ACE HOTEL BROOKLYN | A well-appointed canvas for culinary and community engagement, Demo Kitchen by Ace Hotel is a locus of epicurean culture — dedicated to cooking, connection and above all, community. A light-filled space with floor to ceiling windows, Demo Kitchen features an induction cooking station from Kaliber Innovations, an array of state-of-the-art audiovisual production equipment, and is furnished with custom oak classroom and dining tables crafted by Finnish furniture design collective Made By Choice. Demo Kitchen has capacity for 96 people and is also available for private rental.

For some of my old work, check out a documentary I made before the films. It gives a lot of context.

Also, check out Feast Afrique, a site I put together – it hosts multiple things including an open-access digital library.

Stay well,

Ozoz x
