Yo…sushi up!

This is my tasty serving….on auto-publish while I make my way back from what should be a great weekend in Copenhagen – my first visit ever to a Nordic country!

I made this video a few weeks ago, when I was in London for the FBC 2009.

IMG_0895Walking in to the Selfridges Foodhall, I was confronted with the sight of converyor belts of sushi….and sashimi at Yo Sushi. I had ‘read’ about this phenomenon but never seen it live, so here it goes.

So how do you Yo?

Well, ‘Yoing’ is easy!

IMG_0894 First, you sit down, bottom and all perched on a bar stool.

Then you get given a menu so you know what is what.

All this time, colourful bowls (colour-coded by price) are slowly making their way past you on the conveyor belt. And yes, you can reach out and touch….one of the bowls.

IMG_0889Sushi, sashimi…all waiting to be had. Salads….and even desserts – you entire meal, circling before your eyes. I love it, especially the knowledge that you don’t have to rush at the ‘Yo’ bar. You determine how fast…or slow your meal goes. Isn’t that cool for us, slow eaters? No hovering waiters or fast diners – we can eat what we want, when we want. Reason to celebrate!

Drinks are available and there’s usually an atmosphere of energy and life, at the ‘Yo’ table! It is also nice to peek into the kitchen and watch the chefs cook….knowing that a lot of what sits before you is fresh. I’m sure bespoke orders are taken as well but since I didn’t try it, I can only speculate!

When you’ve stuffed your face, consciously so, your empty bowls and bottles are counted and added up, and the bill is paid.

Wow. This is high on my list of TTT – Things to Try! Along with Kaki (Persimmons and Pomengranates – which I haven’t had for ages, so long so I can’t remember what it tastes like!)

Have you ‘Yo’d’ before?[wpurp-searchable-recipe]Yo…sushi up! – – – [/wpurp-searchable-recipe]

  1. Zurin – you’re welcome

Celia – Oh, I had to laugh at that one. Isn’t life fun, with kids – the planning, the savings. Ha. It is well. And yes, you’re so right, I’d forgotten the lazy susan full of dim sums at chinese restaurants…now I feel like dumplings!

  2. Mademoiselle Délicieuse is absolutely right, sushi trains are huge here in Oz and have been for years. They’re not cheap though, particularly with teenage boys. We used to feed our eldest before we went, because we’d save about $25 on the meal! (He’d still eat a full meal there, but without the pre-feed, he used to eat until we stopped him.) I think it’s something to do with the food constantly circling in front of you.

In some ways, sushi trains are the Japanese equivalent of yum cha (or what the US calls dim sum), the brunch/lunch served in Chinese restaurants where trolley with little plates of food are pushed around the restaurant, and you pick and choose your meal to suit…

  3. mademoiselle délicieuse, Australia…here I come. Soon. Still need to convince hubby though!

Yo is one of the critical particles in Japanese grammar and is often used to express strong conviction (all this I’ve learnt via google!)

Sarah, I’m sure my kids would be fascinated by the belt too…and perhaps the rice!

Shayma dear, I haven’t yo’d at all and Copenhagen was LOVELY. Coming soon….

    Nora,so that’s 2 of us who haven’t yo’d

The cookbook apprentice – Copenhagen photos….coming soon. And I LOVE sushi too

  4. I’ve always wanted to go there, but never quite made it. Although, actually, I am quite worried that I would just keep grabbing those dishes until I can’t move! It looks great fun, though. One day I’ll get there…!

  5. ozoz i lurrv yo sushi. there is something for everyone there. my mum will not touch sashimi, but i took her there while we were shopping at harvey nicks’ and she found smthg to eat, which pleased me to no end. i just love the way one can stack up the little dishes with the coloured rims. the pumpkin korroke and crispy salmon skin are two fave dishes. hope you had a gorgeous time.
