Finding your way around

Hi and welcome to Kitchen Butterfly. I hope you find it easy to navigate…

To get back to the Front page/ Homepage, click on the the Kitchen Butterfly banner at the top of the page.

There are various sections and it is structured so

If you want to find out more about who I am and my kitchen, visit the ‘All about’ section .

The ‘Adventures in’ section chronicles my experiences in ‘Orange county’ (aka The Netherlands); my travels to exotic destinations and markets I’ve visited. Click on any. Each page has a photo link which links you to the travel summary/entry.

I have Free guides which I’ve put together from my many stumblings and failings. They range from ‘ Tips and Tricks in the kitchen’ to ‘help for the First-time cook’ and more. You can read them on the blog or download them. Feel free to distribute, without fear of libel or litigation.

In the Archives, you’ll find a compilation of all my posts.

For Conversions, use the Culiverter in the Right sidebar

On most pages, you will see photos. Some of them are page links and others are links to my Flickr photostream

Photography

My camera of the moment is a point and shoot. A Canon G10, purchased after weeks of research and review. And yes, I use it for all my food photos. Please ooh and aah and tell me I’m a great photographer and if you wonder why I bought a point and shoot, please remember that I have 3 young kids (diaper, milk, childcare costs…. shall I goon?), plus I love a particular feature on the Canon point and shoots which I haven’t quite gotten my fill of, so read on and I’ll tell. And yes, I am serious about photography.

I also have a little tripod – hardly used.

I don’t have Photoshop… yet, because I want to buy the Mac version,
When I buy my Mac.
Which is when?
Don’t know exactly.

I don’t edit my shots – essentially, they come from camera to blog (via Flickr). I use Paint.NET if I have to splice and dice and put text overlays. That’s the way I like it.

I take some photos which look like they’ve been photoshopped but they’ve been done in camera, so I don’t need Photoshop yet . I love Canon.

10 years ago I had a Nikon F50 and in 2006, I migrated to the digital age with a Canon A610. A simple point and shoot which remained on the ‘Auto’ dials for a good couple of years before I learnt what the other settings meant. After a suggestion from a lady I met, I sought out my local photography studio and asked if I could have a ‘Basic Introduction to your Camera’ class. 65 euros and 2 hours later on a certain Wednesday evening, I was an expert. And the dials could shift.

I now understood Apertures and Shutter speed, White balance and ISO settings. All ready to head out to buy a newer, bigger and better camera but then I caught up with me, as usual. I’m a very thorough shopper, especially when I have to spend a lot of cash which mean Google bears the brunt of my desires to find exactly what I want – no review is safe from my perusal, often multiple perusals. And I figured that since I already had something to practice with, then perhaps I should understand it in great detail and note the features that I liked so that when it was time to upgrade, I would be a pro. And then I really started taking pictures, as in multiple captures of one scene, to the extent that I was having conversations with my 6- year old that sort of went like this:

Daughter: Mama, why do you like taking pictures?
Me: Well, I need to take pictures so I can remember things
Daughter: You don’t need to take so many Mama, you just want to.
Me: (thinking, not saying) Smart kids these days eh – is that what they teach them at school?

Anyway, as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted by my memories, so began the voyage of discovery: the joys of Macro and mostly exciting – Colour accents (ref. Photoshop discussion above). Anyway, after months of glorious photo making, Black & White expeditions, trips to Vienna, Rome and Paris, the LCD broke. Cracked. Shattered actually. Kaput. Meaning that I could no longer change the settings or adjust the modes. Time for Plan B and a new hunt.

I wanted a Canon D40 (research distillation) though I didn’t feel quite ready. Plus remember the diaper story. Also I had decided that I couldn’t live without Colour accents… which btw only Canons have and only in their P&Ss. I guess it might seem a bit amateurish but I don’t care and that has sealed my fate. Another point & shoot.

I will get my dSLR soon, maybe after my Mac, which will be someday, a day that remains unnamed and not a date yet. …. Till then, I remain, hopelessly devoted to my G10

Comment guidelines
My love for blogging is the fact that this is a sphere of living in which people share a common desire – food. I love comments. Which make my head swell (compliments), and perhaps not so much those which call into question my honour and integrity (those cause most people to feel challanged).

Feel free to join the discussion, share a tip, correct a wrong or a typo (or several). Yes you’ll find some typos, please correct and not condemn. Thanks (btw my mum’s an English teacher and I’ve tried my best to learn but I’m so not perfect – don’t tell my husband).

Enough said. Please remember that this is my space. My own personal space. Which I absolutely want to share. But not at all costs. But note that bad commenters will be prosecuted. Just joking. Its so easy to block an email address which just don’t cut it.

Err on the side of caution.

Please.

  • Love, love your blog! I’m on vacation, so I have limited time for blog reading (I’m stalling jumping in the shower to foodie blog read ;) Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m your whole wheat buddy.

Yes….we LOVE chocolate and those waffles look amazing! Can’t wait to try them.

I loved reading about you, and see we have a lot in common. I read all reviews and google search and such. Neat to read about your camera search. I just discovered the macro setting and can’t wait to learn more about my camera settings. Unfortunately the new camera my mom bought me for my birthday needs to be looked at. Everything that isn’t a food shot in the macro setting comes out blurry. Even when set on proper settings. Discouraging.

I am definitely subscribing to your blog and can’t wait to spend more time here!! I better get a move on!
